During the 15th century the Florence region of Italy was not much distinct than many other areas of Italy, but it produced several artisans that would eventually capture icons of the Renaissance period (Skira Editore S.p.A. 13). One such artist may have slipped into obscurity if not for a group of British students who were dissatisfied with the stale sprint of art being taught in their school. In 1848, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood started a quest to amaze a different style of art to express themselves and their concerns of the man around them when they rediscovered Sandro Botticelli (Connolly 44).
Allesondro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi was born in Florence, Italy in 1445 (BBCW production). Sandro had several brothers and the eldest, Giovanni, was a stout boy who garnered the nickname il Botticelli or dwarfish barrel (A&E Networks). This nickname stuck with not single the eldest son but also for the rest of the family (Connolly 8). At the age of six Sondro Botticelli was sent to begin an apprenticeship with Fra. Filippo Lippi (Connolly 9). Fra. Filippo was an accomplished artist and impressed upon Botticelli a unique style. Botticelli developed a style of key fruiting with figures in flowing robes which expressed movement (Connolly 6).



Botticellis art was so revered he was hired as a personal artist for the influential Medici family (Connolly 6).
One of Botticellis most engaging pieces of art work is La Primavera. La Primavera, meaning spring, was commissioned by the Medici family and started in 1478 intended for a wedding gift (BBCW production). La Primavera was completed using a type of paint called egg tempera (BBCW production).
