Although some Irish airs were celebrated in manuscripts or English entreatys during the 18th century , the mathematical operation of collecting traditional Irish music began in the twentieth century, meaning most of the airs, songs and tunes which are preserved were probably sedate in the last 300 years.
In the year 1726 , the freshman collection of Irish music appeared entitled A collection of the Most Celebrated Irish Tunes containing forty nine airs. This collection was published by father and son William and John Neale. The just copy of this collection available now is preserved among a collection of Edward hit manuscripts at Queens University, Belfast.

Edward Bunting from County Armagh was the first of the great Irish collectors to put down tunes directly from participants in that field. At the age of nineteen he was commissioned to nonate music from oral-tradition harpists at The Belfast lie festival in 1726.This festival was organised by a group of firm citizens with the aim of noting music, poetry and oral traditions of Ireland from the harpers. The three volumes he wrote were by and by made into one collection called The Ancient Music of Ireland : The Bunting Collections.
