Measuring stress and its impact on our health
Stress has, all over the years, been given many different definitions. Hans Selye (1979) defined stress as the nonspecific response of the soundbox to any demand make upon it. In Selyes definition of stress, a demand refers to a stressor, a stressor is an event that demands attention from the personify, the feeling is usually keen or threatening. The body goes through a process of lintel with stress, Hans Selye studied the fight or flight response, which he called the general Adaption Syndrome. (J.W.Kalat.2008) In this process the body goes through three stages: The misgiving stage, where the body is on alert and the mind decides whether or not the situation is an emergency. In this first appraisal, the kindly nervous form is activated, hormones such as adrenaline are released thus resulting in the speeding up of heart rate. The second stage of Selyes General Adaption Syndrome is the stage of resistance, in this stage the activity of the sympathetic nervous system decreases, however different hormones are produced by the adrenal cortex so to keep the body alert. so putting a high demand on the bodys capacity and resources and may affect the insubordinate system. Finally, the trine stage is the stage of exhaustion.
After prolonged stress the body is tired, the bodily systems such as the nervous system and the insubordinate system no longer have enough energy to function properly. (B.Seaward.2006)
Various researches into stress have shown a data link between stress and illness, this is due to the suppression of the immune system. If the immune system is suppressed for a long period of eon the body may be vulnerable to infection and disease. This association has been given its own name called psychoneuroimmunology meaning the direct fooling relationship between stress and illness. (DeVito.1994)
