Her father James McCauley, was a carpenter and her mother, Leona Edward, was a teacher. Rosa position was an African American. When her parents narrated, she moved to Montgomery, Alabama with her mother. When she was small, even as a child, she suffered poor health and had chronic tonsillitis. She grew up on a farm with her maternal grandparents, mother, and her younger brother. She began her lifelong rank and file in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Until she was eleven she go to rural schools. Then she enrolled at the Industrial School for Girls in Montgomery, where she took academic and vocational courses.
