Jeff Brown English 2327 Jeff Brown Reader Response There is no doubt roughly Benjamin Franklins and Thomas Paines historical work and importance in American history. But why do we study them in English courses? The answer is that they are brilliant and artistic writers. So for English class its not necessarily what they say but how they write it. Franklin and Paine each rile an establishment, but they approach their subjects in different ways. Paine challenges the false loom of the church through deconstructive discourse. At the beginning of The Age of Reason, Paine establishes his mark on how and why he has his belief in God. He emphatically states, My own mind is my own church (643). This sets up a deconstruction of the structural influence of churches that corrupt his uncoiled theology. He is able to identify how the church uses text to curb in its control. He writes, All national institutions of churches…appear to me no other than human inventions… (643). At the very heart of his contestation is this distinctive awareness of the invention and power of language. At the beginning of his rebuke is a denouncement of the church for trying to reckon God, or replace Him, by attacking it with its own medicine, text.

He is literally saying, if you are going to deconstruct Gods will then I will deconstruct yours over me. Exposing that text is invention is essentially deconstructive. Through his own words, he exposes the difference between reality and invention. The reality is that he believes in God, and the invention is that the church manipulates a false sense of order. Ultimately, his billet helps establish the separation of church and state. A little slight subtle is Franklins approach to attacking England. His approach is strictly ironic. The title of his piece that criticizes England for its tyranny towards the colonies, Rules by Which a prominent Empire May Be Reduced to a humbled One, suggests clearly that he intends to give advice to England...
